⭐ Why You’ll Love This Italian Sausage Recipe

Quick. You can get air fryer Italian sausages prepped, cooked, and ready to serve in under 15 minutes.

Easy. Less that 5 ingredients are needed to make these juicy sausage and bell pepper subs for a super easy meal.

Minimal cleanup. Everything is cooked in the air fryer, so when you are done air frying all you need to do is clean the basket and any potential spattering or dripping that may have occurred.

Juicy sausages inside with a crispy skin on the outside combine to make for mouthwatering Italian sausages.

Versatile. You can eat the sausages with bell peppers inside a roll just as I have done here. Or, you can slice them into chunks and serve them with pasta and marinara sauce. I also enjoy air fryer Italian sausage without any fixings and served with a side of potato wedges cooked in the air fryer or some frozen air-fried French fries.

    🥘 Ingredients

Italian Sausage. Make sure to use uncooked sausages. Then choose whatever type of sausage, mild, spicy, or sweet Italian sausage that you prefer. Our favorite sausage is Johnsonville Italian sausage. They make mild Italian sausage, hot Italian sausage, sweet sausage, and even parmesan and four cheese all of which are a great option.

Bell Peppers. I use 2 to 3 peppers of different colors just to make the sausage sandwich more colorful and festive. Red, green, orange, and yellow all make for nice combinations. I select whichever ones look best and are moderately sized at my grocery store or farmer's market.

    sliced multi-colored bell peppers

Seasonings and oil. I use just a small amount of oil, garlic powder, and salt to toss with the bell peppers before air frying. Adding these makes for just the right texture and taste.

Hoagie buns. These buns are nice and substantial enough to hold your Italian sausage and fixings. If you select another type of bun, such as a brat bun or sausage bun, make sure it is substantial enough to hold your sausage.

The exact quantities of these ingredients is in the recipe card below.

🔪 How To Make Air Fryer Italian Sausage and Peppers

    1. Preheat the air fryer to 360°F.
    2. Arrange the Italian sausage links in a single layer in the air fryer basket.
    3. In a medium bowl, toss the bell peppers with the oil and salt. Scatter the bell peppers around the edge of the sausages.
    4. Cook sausage and peppers for 6 minutes. Using tongs, carefully turn the sausages over. Use the tongs to gently toss the peppers. Continue air frying for 6 more minutes or until the internal temperature of the sausages reaches 160 degrees Fahrenheit when tested using a digital meat thermometer.
    5. Using tongs, transfer the sausages and peppers to a plate.
    6. Optional: for warm buns place the buns into the air fryer at 360 degrees F and heat for 2 to 3 minutes or until warm.
    7. Place the Italian sausages in the buns with the peppers scattered on top. Serve with your favorite condiments.

    💭 Tips

    • Place a sheet of parchment paper in the bottom of the basket to prevent the excess grease from dripping to the bottom of the air fryer which may create smoke.

    📖 Variations

There are many different kinds of sausages. Italian sausages typically come 5 to a pack and weigh just under 4 ounces each. The size and thickness of the sausage fit nicely inside the air fryer basket and will get done in the recommended timeframe.

In addition to Italian pork sausage, you can use other types of raw sausage such as Italian chicken sausage or turkey sausage. Other sausage types may need more or less cooking time than Italian pork sausage.

You can also make Italian sausage in the oven or brats in the air fryer for more ways to get a flav meal of on the table.

🥗 What To Serve With Italian Sausage

There are so many side dishes that go well with air fryer Italian sausage. You could start with a simple side salad or a cucumber and tomato salad for an easy dinner. For potato lovers, we love these roasted potatoes or these air fryer potato wedges.

    🥡 Storage

Leftover air fryer Italian sausage and peppers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

An easy way to reheat this air fryer sausage recipe the next day is to place a sausage in the air fryer oven at 325 degrees F for about 5 minutes.

    Cooks Tips

*Nutritional information is calculated using the Italian sausage, green bell peppers, and a sub-style bun. Different types of buns can vary substantially. No condiments are included in the calculations.
Some air fryer brands state that you don't need to reheat them. I prefer to preheat my air fryer for about 5 minutes or until fully heated. I am more confident in the cooking temps and times when I do preheat the air fryer.
Italian sausage brands will all cook at roughly the same amount of time as long as they are links, under about 4 ounces in weight.
Any brand of Italian sausage will work in this recipe as long as they are sausage links and each weighs about 4 ounces. I especially love Johnsonville sausages, but I will occasionally use some specially prepared ones from my butcher or local market. You can use mild, hot, or sweet Italian sausages or try different spice blends at different times.
Sausages should be cooked to an internal temperature of 160°F (71°C) as read by a digital meat thermometer.
Temp the same sausage while cooking so the others are not pierced.
